Responsibilities

The Director, Material Management transports and stores IV fluids, irrigation fluids, and personal care items considered to be medications by the FDA. This leader has the responsibility to develop a strategic directional course for the department which coincides with Norton Healthcare's overall strategic plan as well as new applications and systems essential to business directions. Charged with the goal of continuous quality improvement, the role must provide leadership and supervision to staff members. With responsibility for the overall administrative and clinical (as appropriate) direction and department management, this leader facilitates the development and delivery of excellence in service practice by evaluating and coordinating the services delivered. The role demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to direct the services appropriate for the patient/family population being served and integrates departmental services with the primary functions of the hospital.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Formulates, approves, and monitors department budgets goals. Adjusts practices to meet budget goals. Collaborates with manager and supervisors to strategically set inventory asset levels that provide acceptable management of cash flow, but also allows for customer satisfaction. Supports Corporate Materiel Management policies on supply standardization and utilization practices. Works with all levels of Norton Healthcare management teams to reduce supply and other operating costs. Monitors and advises the financial reporting for all warehouse inventory supplies throughout designated hospital. Assists department managers with budget maintenance, interpretations of financial reports and attends DOR reviews for the designated hospital. Participates in the annual budgeting process, assures that planning allows for growth or streamlining of services which correspond with the strategic initiatives of Norton Healthcare.
  • Assures positive working relationships exist throughout the department(s) supervised, utilizes system resources to monitor such-employee opinion surveys, exit interviews, departmental meetings. Involves staff in planning process to attain valuable input and to assure positive outcomes. Works harmoniously with and effectively supervises personnel under his/her direction.
  • Provides strategic leadership to manager and supervisors. Holds and shows record of regular department meetings, where pertinent information is discussed in a timely manner. Employees have the opportunity for input, and receive communication relevant to their job. Recommends, initiates and supports new ideas to the Administrative departments for all of Norton Healthcare. Demonstrates ability to recruit and retain qualified and competent management staff to meet needs of the department(s) managed. Provides orientation, in-service training and continuous education to department management staff. Completes transitional and annual evaluations for management staff in accordance with Norton Healthcare standards. Attends Management Development Sessions as presented for leaders of Norton Healthcare. Provides leadership to reports by setting a professional standard of cooperation with all employees and departments of Norton Healthcare. Attends Management Staff meeting for supported Hospitals and provides input regarding supply management, vendor relations, contract changes and updates as necessary ensuring appropriate levels of communication between the hospitals and Corporate Materiel Management department.
  • Provides education and assistance to end users of the Materiel Management information system. Acts as a Super User for the Capital Budgeting system. Supports, while working with the Norton Surgical Department, the Patient Information System, with regards to surgical preference cards.
  • Manages the introduction of new products to the medical supply formulary in conjunction with Materiel Management, through the approval channels of the Technology Assessment Council, for physician-preference supplies/equipment of the appropriate supply chain team for other supplies. Supports vendor partnership management by only interacting with approved vendor representatives in good standings. Embraces approved supply chain initiatives with timely follow through on new product implementations and evaluations. Communicates approved cost-management initiatives with staff and ensures their understanding and cooperation in implementing them in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Three years of supervisory experience
  • Five years of experience in Inventory Control, or Supply Chain, Distribution, Procurement, Sterilization and Equipment
  • Bachelor Degree

Desired:

  • Five years of supervisory experience in healthcare
  • One year of experience with Lawson
  • One year of Experience with Pyxis
  • Master Degree
