Job Summary

At the direction of the VP of FERC & RTO Strategy & Policy and Director of FERC Policy, initiate, direct and coordinate activities involving regulatory affairs of the AEP System that affect the company's interests including, but not limited to, matters before FERC, North American Electric Reliability Corporation, Regional Transmission Organizations, Independent System Operators, Department of Energy, and other various federal agencies (as assigned) in regard to pending and proposed regulations and consumer interests.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Keep abreast of all emerging regulation and policies that affect the company and inform AEP business unit executives on relative FERC opinions, rules, policies, and reliability standards. Anticipate and research unique legal issues that could introduce risk or otherwise impact AEP.
  • Serve as primary liaison to FERC with substantive responsibility for advising on all regulatory matters under the jurisdiction of the Commission with primary emphasis on the Federal Power Act, Natural Gas Act and Department of Energy Organization Act and those State regulatory matters affecting or affected by the jurisdiction of the Commission.
  • Work closely with company representatives to identifying emerging regulatory and policy developments that affect the company's interests, determining whether a company response to these developments is necessary, and making recommendations on the appropriate protocols and nature of any response.
  • Ensure that all written documentation or oral communications is reflective of AEP's regulatory strategy, company position and in the interest of our stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with representatives of other utilities, national associations representing electric utility and energy interests, and other appropriate organizations that affect the operation of the company.
  • Coordinate representation of the Company before various Associations as assigned, including the Edison Electric Institute and WIRES.
  • Maintain close relationships, serve as liaison and coordinate regulatory affairs activities with company business units to establish effective and harmonious relations with FERC commissioners and offices and other appropriate governmental officials responsible for developing regulations, policies and programs affecting the company's interests.
  • Make recommendations and assist on the formulation of company policies and practices

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, public policy, government, engineering, or related field of study.

Experience:

  • Ten (10) years of government relations, legal or utility industry policy experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A degree in law is highly desirable.
  • Thorough knowledge of the issues facing the company and the electric utility industry.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Fully understand governmental and political processes.
