Hiring Range: $29.33- $35.19. (plus daily on-call pay of $35 for weekdays, $52 for weekends and $72 for holidays) The Deputy Coroner will conduct investigations of all deaths and related procedures that fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Coroner. To be in charge when assigned by the Coroner. To conduct a Medicolegal Death Investigation, positively identify the deceased, and notify the next of kin. To observe and or assist forensic pathologists with autopsies if asked to do so and to maintain a proper chain of custody with all evidence, including scene and autopsy photographs. Schedule: This is an on-call/occasional position. Must be able to take call: 24 hour call, at least but not limited to 5-6 days a month which can include weekends and holidays. Duties Respond to the scene of death and investigate the death scene, photograph, sketch, and properly remove or assist in the removal of a body or bodyies from the scene. Collect physical evidence pertinent to the death investigation. Interview families, friends, professionals, and others associated with the deceased. Obtain statements, documents, and related factual evidence. Examine and understand records needed in a death investigation. Review information obtained to determine the cause of death and identify the deceased, when necessary. Administer proper procedures in the notification of next-of-kin and releasing the property. Will have the necessary documentation for forensic pathologist prior to autopsy. Confer with medical, social, workers, and law enforcement agencies related to investigative cases. Prepare investigative reports, and press releases and maintain records. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate's degree in related fields of medicine (paramedic, nursing) or criminology or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least three years of experience in customer service, an administrative or technical position or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. At least one year of law enforcement, medical field training/experience (paramedic or nursing) or firefighting preferred. A valid Driver's License is required. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year from date of hire: CCA certification OR Diplomate with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators. (ABMDI). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Medicine, Anatomy, and/ or able to interpret medical records. Investigative techniques, interviewing techniques, and procedures. Applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations. Colorado Coroner's Statutes Sources used in obtaining applicable data. Be able to perform under stressful operational and administrative environments. Be able to work on a team as a team member. Have attention to detail Be non-judgmental, supportive, and compassionate. Obtain information and evidence by observation, record examination, and interviews. Analyze and evaluate information obtained from applicable sources. Secure and present evidence in oral and written form. Interpret and comply with laws and regulations governing investigation. Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with a variety of individuals and agencies. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word. Must be able to lift 50 lbs without assistance Must be able to drag 150 lbs without assistance Must be able to hike up a hill for a mile Must be able to be exposed to hot or cold environmental weather Must be able to function anytime day or night with or without sleep Must be able to have cell phone reception at all times including at your house.
