The Opportunity

As a dedicated Data Engineer Staff, you will collaborate closely with Business, Architecture and Development leaders to translate business strategy and business architecture into technology vision, technology blueprints, architecture runway items, technical risk mitigation, and detailed designs. In this role, you will work closely with business, architecture and development teams to identify and resolve technical risks using Agile spikes and Proof of Concept activities in preparation for Program Increment sessions where the Staff Engineer will transition designs to the development teams to code the solution(s).


The ideal candidate will be an experienced Data Engineer with expertise in architecting, designing, coding and testing Transactional and Analytical data/information solutions. They will have a deep understanding of property and casualty insurance and modern cloud software development technologies while keeping an eye on emerging technologies.


Data Engineers (DEs) are engaged in all phases of the data management lifecycle. This includes gathering and analyzing requirements, collecting, processing, storing, securing, and archiving data. Develop and maintain technical systems for data reporting and technical solutions applying emerging technologies. Partner with the business to ensure data management solutions aligned to business objectives.


We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX Or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is available for this position.


What you'll do:

  • Leads across technology domains to help design, build and handle data pipelines including data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata, data quality, and workload management.

  • Guides to re-engineer data processes to improve overall efficiency and business value.

  • Reviews and provides feedback on data models and design considerations.

  • Ensures that teams build processes that support effective data management, metadata management, and data quality.

  • Documents and socializes findings on technology product evaluations and educates team on options available and preferences in technology selection.

  • Mentors and coaches experienced engineers and provides business inputs and feedback to leadership.

  • Leverages experience with large scale distributed processing systems to collaborate with architects and handle technology choices and implementation processes across multiple teams.

  • Socializes standard methodologies in secure data management, metadata management, information governance, compliance alignment and data quality with teams.

  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

  • Remains relevant in the industry to bring expertise to USAA practices.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.


What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 10 years of data engineering, data analysis or software development experience implementing data solutions to include 4 years demonstrated technical leadership experience and/or leading teams.

  • 4 years of data engineering or data management experience.

  • Knowledge of emerging and/or evolution of existing technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to act on all phases of the technology lifecycle.

  • Strong ability to design, build and handle data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata, and workload management.

  • Experience with end to end delivering of data solutions that includes building, handling, and optimizing data pipelines across cloud environments; curating and modeling the data for various types of consumers/products and their pattern of usage to include data marts, data lake, and operational analytic applications.

  • Experience completing multiple projects demonstrating the agile methodology in delivering data.

  • Subject matter Depth and Breadth in SQL and Relational Databases.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining Cloud technology and solutions.

  • Experience with large scale system migrations preferably in a cloud environment

  • Ability to demonstrate deep knowledge with transaction databases and Snowflake.

  • Modern cloud experience, with a preference for AWS

  • Experience within the P&C domain

  • Understanding of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence

What we offer:


Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $138,230.00 - $264,200.00.


Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
