Position: Data Center Critical Facilities Engineer
Location: Elk Grove Village, IL - Hybrid (Onsite required on a regular basis (not 5 days/week though)

Job Description

  • The Data Center Critical Facilities Engineer will be responsible for Data Center Engineering within the client's Data Centers and colocation facilities, including risk management and mitigation, corrective and preventative maintenance of critical infrastructure, vendor management and metric reporting.
  • Provide onsite and remote support for core infrastructure devices (network, security, compute, storage, etc.).
  • Provide administrative support via our DCIM tool (Nlyte) for documenting all Move/Add/Change/Decommission (MACD) work performed across all data centers and colocation facilities.
  • Comply with colocation shipment rules by creating inbound and outbound tickets for equipment as necessary.
  • Partner with our vendors to perform installations. In our corporate owned data centers, operate and manage both routine and emergency services on a variety of critical systems as needed - such as: switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.
  • Work in partnership with the client's Facilities team to ensure the highest levels of operation for critical data center infrastructure is always maintained.
  • Create and update reporting and metrics as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees specialized preventative and corrective maintenance on-site to critical facility components and/or systems.
  • Engages vendors to perform moderately difficult repairs, maintenance, and installations and on-site inspections to critical facility systems.
  • Supervises the Building Monitoring System (BMS) and resolves alarms for specialized issues requiring considerable judgement and implications to resolve; follows guidelines on standard procedures and makes recommendations for solutioning.
  • Operates and maintains plumbing, fire suppression, and life-safety systems.
  • Implements energy efficiency measures.
  • Works on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative. Understands implications of work and makes recommendations for solutions.
  • Coordinates and directs vendors on skilled tasks to ensure that maintenance activities are carried out per standards and requirements.
  • Assists with the creation and submission of scripts for maintenance.
  • Tracks and implements the work approval process for service providers for critical maintenance (including briefing at the start of work, control of work during the day workday/shift, final review of the work carried out).
  • In cooperation with the vendors, changes/updates technical files for plants and equipment ensuring files and builds are up to date.
  • Identifies Single Points of Failure (SPOFs) and makes recommendations for solutions.
  • Responds to all on-site incidents, including failures, significant problems, and delays.
  • Performs Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Supports the on-site staff during incidents.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 2-4 years of Data Center Engineering experience required.
  • 2 years of experience at Apprenticeship/Technician level in Mechanical/Heating, HVAC, and/or Electrical Engineering (preferred).
  • Experience in a data center, hospital, power plant, or similar mission critical environment.
  • Experience in electrical equipment inspection, troubleshooting/repair, and acceptance testing.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment (i.e., Medium/Low Voltage Feeders, Transformers, Switchgear, Relay Protection, Generators, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, VFDs, Relay Protection, Chillers, Air handling units and CRAC units).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on systems.
  • Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret both internal and external documents such as general media/publications, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, policies, proposals, and standard operating procedures.
  • Confident, comfortable communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid presentation skills with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of management through clear, informed, and logical discussions/presentations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Apply concepts such as probability, statistics, modeling, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Works with mathematical concepts such as averages and/or variances.

  • Collaborates with others to resolve difficult facility incidents.

  • Informs stakeholders of inventory needs to maintain optimal stock levels of critical parts and equipment, may support in coordinating processes for maintaining inventory.
  • Acts as a mentor to others in resolving incidents.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • No Licensure or Certification Required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle & feel & talk, hear & see.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk & reach with hands & arms.
  • Employee must be able to work more than 40 hrs per week.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment and work on platforms, ladders and under raised floors.
