This is the first of two levels in the Labor and Trades Supervision series. Incumbents supervise the day to day activities of an assigned work crew engaged in infrastructure, building, or grounds maintenance and repair. Responsibilities may include prioritizing work orders; assigning tasks and monitoring employee performance; ensuring the safety of employees and the public; developing scope of work for small projects; inspecting finished projects to ensure quality of work; calculating material needs; ordering supplies and materials; coordinating and monitoring the work of contractors; addressing complaints from the public and/or police jurors; and maintaining records of activities. Incumbents are working supervisors, and participate in the tasks of the work crew they supervise.(The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures, and maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations. Supervises the day-to-day operations in assigned area of responsibility, which includes: planning and coordinating project scopes and processes; developing and coordinating work plans; inspecting in-progress and completed work to ensure conformance with established standards; and monitoring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards. Coordinates activities with other departments to ensure maintenance and trades services and needs are met. Prepares and reviews a variety of information, logs, invoices and operational records and reports. Responds to a variety of inquiries, requests, and complaints from the Public and/or the police jurors. Maintains inventory which includes calculating materials needed and ordering supplies and materials when levels are low. May complete lower level duties of trades activities and/or maintenance jobs which includes repairs, preventative maintenance, etc. in area of assignment. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises a group of skilled and unskilled workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Parish's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and five years experience in area of responsibility; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. LICENSING REQUIREMENTS Some positions may require Water/Wastewater Certification. Valid Driver's License as per State law or requirement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) depending on position. Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, odors, dusts, chemicals, and intense noises. UNIFORM An employee in this position will be supplied with a uniform, provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The employee is responsible for abiding by the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.
