Job Description

Job Summary:

Provides general and emergency care to inmate patients, including initial examination. Prepares equipment and assists physician and/or physician extender during examination and treatment.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:
  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Preferred
  • Associate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
  • Experience in corrections medical care: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification: Preferred
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required

Department Specific License/Certifications:
  • Paramedic (PM) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or California Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Medical Assistant - NCCT (NCCT) or Certified Medical Assistant- NHA (CMA-NHA) or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Medical Assistant (MA) or American Medical Tech Board MA (MA-AMT): Required

Essential Functions:
  • Assesses and identifies health problems of new inmates and develops medical records. Assists with direct patient care under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN). Follows through on patient education and after care instructions. Performs assessment of vital signs and communicates findings to the primary RN. Provides individualized care plan for patient presentation according to acceptable medical practice standards, issued standing orders, on-line medical control and department policies and procedures.
  • Administers prescribed treatment and medication to patients within licensing authorization.
  • Sterilizes and maintains equipment.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
