APEL Extrusions is an independent extruder, finisher and fabricator of aluminum extrusions serving the commercial, residential, and industrial markets of Western Canada and the Western United States. With facilities in Calgary Canada, Coburg Oregon, and a new, greenfield facility in Phoenix Arizona, APEL Extrusions is a fully integrated extruder with six extrusion presses, (2 in Calgary and 3 in Oregon and 1 in Phoenix) and a full array of finishing capabilities occupying over 600,000 square feet of modern manufacturing space employing approximately 250 people.

APEL Extrusions has an immediate requirement for a qualified Electrical Engineer or PLC Electrician in its Phoenix, Arizona facility.

Under the direction of Corporate Engineering, the Electrical Engineer or PLC Electrician will be responsible for designing, programming, and troubleshooting control systems for industrial equipment and other automation projects particularly PLCs, HMIs and servo systems. The position will need to be able to interact with other engineers, shop floor fabricators, management, and customers. This position will create electrical schematics, panel layouts, and bills of materials for machine control systems. The incumbent will be responsible for facility electrical systems and ensuring all systems meet regulatory requirements. This position will provide direction to Skilled Electrical Trades Personnel on multiple shifts and will provide electrical/controls leadership and technical troubleshooting skills for critical manufacturing equipment in the manufacturing of extruded aluminum products.

Nature and Scope:

In general, the Electrical Engineer performs complicated engineering work. The focus of this position is on the use of the below skills and training to provide quality equipment, facilities, services, and consultation that are capable of meeting engineering department and plant requirements at a competitive cost:

  • Exercising independent judgment and action.
  • Applies sound principles and techniques in the design, development, or testing of electronic systems, equipment, products, and facilities.
  • Plans and supports installation of process equipment modifications including the management of schedules and costs.
  • Tracks equipment downtime, occurrence frequency and develops preventative/predictive programs to improve performance.
  • Controls and maintains equipment drawings, program security and equipment specs/spare parts.

General duties are to:
  1. Day-to-day technical advice, problem solving and support to operations and maintenance by applying engineering principles, tools, and skills to solve problems to root cause.
  2. Knowledge of applicable electrical safety codes.
  3. Ensuring immediate equipment functionality and supporting the implementation of long-term improvement strategies.
  4. Reviewing or participating in existing equipment modifications or new equipment installations (capex) and ensuring compliance with appropriate engineering standards.
  5. Developing and implementing engineering solutions to eliminate repetitive equipment failures.
  6. Facilitating the improvement of equipment reliability through reducing failures and turnaround times for planned and unplanned events.
  7. Leading/Facilitating risk assessment and value analysis to make accurate engineering decisions for repair/replace/redesign.
  8. Identifying and/or implementing new ideas and cost reduction opportunities.
  9. Managing contractor activities to support the implementation of critical equipment repairs or modifications.
  10. Conveying technical ideas and concepts to support plant objectives and goals.
  11. Designing, troubleshooting, and understanding various PLC systems and other low voltage power distribution systems.
  12. Creating, maintaining, and updating equipment files, programs, and drawings.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

The engineer is expected to have skills and training normally obtained from undergraduate or graduate engineering programs with emphasis on Electrical Engineering and PLC controls. Progress toward professional registration is a plus if demonstrated.
  1. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or a licensed journeyman with General Supervising Electrician Certification.
  2. Minimum of 5 years managerial experience in a manufacturing / plant environment.
  3. Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
