Our client, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee and manage the institution's financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintaining robust internal controls, and providing strategic financial insights to support the college's mission and goals. This role requires a strong leader with a deep understanding of higher education financial management, exceptional analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of financial accountability.

Controller Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting and Analysis:

    • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory requirements.
    • Provide comprehensive financial analysis and reporting to senior management and the Board of Trustees.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting:

    • Lead the annual budgeting process, including preparation, monitoring, and adjustments.
    • Develop financial forecasts and models to support strategic planning and decision-making.
    • Collaborate with department heads to ensure budget adherence and fiscal responsibility.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance:

    • Establish and maintain effective internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as college policies and procedures.
    • Coordinate and manage annual audits, including preparation and response to audit findings.
  • Treasury and Cash Management:

    • Oversee cash flow management, investment activities, and debt administration.
    • Manage banking relationships and optimize the use of financial resources.
    • Ensure effective liquidity management to support the college's operational needs.
  • Accounting Operations:

    • Supervise the accounting team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
    • Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions.
    • Implement and maintain accounting systems and software to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strategic Financial Leadership:

    • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support the college's strategic initiatives and long-term planning.
    • Participate in strategic planning and policy development as a member of the senior leadership team.
    • Communicate financial information and performance to stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners.


Controller Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA certification required.
    • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role, preferably in higher education.
  • Skills and Competencies:

    • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and other relevant accounting standards.
    • Proven experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
    • Strong understanding of internal controls, compliance, and risk management.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in financial software and systems, such as ERP and accounting software.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and foster a culture of financial transparency and accountability.
