Job DescriptionConstruction laborers perform manual labor tasks, such as:
- Cleaning and preparing construction sites: Removing debris and hazards, and ensuring the area is safe and organized
- Loading and unloading materials: Moving raw materials from work trucks, and identifying and distributing them to appropriate locations
- Building or taking apart structures: Assisting in the construction of structures, such as scaffolding, bracing, and temporary structures
- Digging trenches: Backfilling holes or compacting earth to prepare for construction
- Operating equipment: Using power tools and handtools, such as jackhammers, saws, and drills, according to project plans and specifications
- Assisting carpenters with building structural and non-structural residential components per design
- Maintaining tools and equipment: Keeping tools and equipment in good working condition
- Helping with concrete: Assisting in the pouring and leveling of concrete, as well as the installation of concrete forms
Construction laborers typically receive assignments from a site supervisor, and work with other laborers throughout the day. They may take short breaks to prevent fatigue, and eat lunch to maintain their energy levels. After construction ends, laborers help load tools and other items back into work trucks and clean the site of any debris.
Some required qualifications for construction laborers include:
- High school diploma
- Valid driver's license
- One or more years of experience in construction desired but not required
- Ability to travel out of town during the week or on weekends
- Ability to lift heavy equipment
- Excellent stamina
Most of the work is performed outdoors in inclement weather conditions for extended periods of times.
