Overview:

The Construction Inspector II is responsible for checking, evaluating, and inspecting workmanship and materials on various public works or utility construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and departmental regulations.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is a journey-level position that requires a complete knowledge of construction inspection principles and practices. The Construction Inspector II works with greater independence and handles more complex assignments compared to the Construction Inspector I.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Reports to the Construction Contracts Administrator or higher-level engineering staff.

Examples of Duties:

Review and evaluate plans and specifications for assigned projects.

Check the placement of work in the public right of way and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and city standards.

Inspect materials to ensure they conform to specifications and standards.

Document work progress and completion, record materials used, and take appropriate action regarding safety and environmental violations.

Verify line, grade, size, elevation, and location of structures.

Inspect adjacent properties for damage and coordinate work with other city departments and utilities.

Prepare as-built plans for completed projects.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

Principles and methods of public works construction.

Construction defects and faults.

Asphalt, concrete, pipe installation, etc.

Basic computer skills.

Project management principles.

Traffic control regulations.

Applicable laws, regulations, and codes.

Skills in:

Interpreting engineering plans and specifications.

Preparing accurate engineering records.

Communicating effectively with contractors, engineers, and property owners.

Submitting reports and documentation in a timely manner.

Detecting and locating faulty materials and workmanship.

Following oral and written directions.

Operating a personal computer and relevant software.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Providing excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School graduation or equivalent (GED).

Three years of experience performing construction inspections.

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

For Water assignments, possession of Division of Drinking Water (DDW) D2 and T2 Licenses is highly desirable.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: Four years of subprofessional engineering or skilled construction experience, preferably including some construction inspection experience.

Highly Desired Qualifications:

Water Infrastructure Construction Inspection experience.

Public Works Construction Inspection Experience.

Capital Improvements Projects (CIP) Inspection experience.

D or T certification/license with Regional Water Quality Control Board, Division of Drinking Water (DDW).

Microsoft application experience.
