Responsibilities of the Construction Accountant:

  • Oversee all financial aspects of projects, ensuring adherence to company policies.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies among team members (project manager, superintendent, and engineer).
  • Communicate potential profitability or risk issues to management.
  • Establish and implement procedures to meet client contractual requirements for billing and accounts receivable.
  • Conduct client contract analysis to determine billing deadlines, payment terms, and other relevant details.
  • Audit client billing and project ledger regularly for compliance with contract requirements, GAAP, and company policy.
  • Manage accounts payable for vendor and subcontractor invoices, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Oversee the month-close process, ensuring accurate posting or accrual of project costs.
  • Update monthly project assets and rentals for insurance documentation.
  • Manage project financial closeout, ensuring all requirements are met before issuing final payments.
  • Report on cash position, highlighting potential risks or profitability issues to the project team.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests.
  • Perform other assigned activities, duties, and responsibilities.


Qualifications for the Construction Accountant:

  • Experience working with a Commercial Construction Company (one of substantial size and not a smaller Mom & Pop shop) and owner pay applications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with 3 years of commercial construction accounting experience, or equivalent.
  • Excellent knowledge of GAAP principles for timely and accurate reporting.
  • Understanding of accounting implications related to contract terms, profitability, and risk management.
  • Excel proficiency (VLOOKUP's & pivot tables)
  • Construction accounting experience:
    • Experience and understanding of project costing, understanding of what is reimbursable and what is not reimbursable)
    • Proficient in cost analysis procedures (POC/WIP)
  • Working knowledge and experience with AIA contracts & billing (G702 & G703 forms)- need to have experience completing these, not just knowledge or experience gathering information.
  • Experience with SAP & Textura is preferred.
