JOB SUMMARY
To operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines or machining centers to perform various machine operations including cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, and broaching of metallic (and non-metallic) work pieces to produce complex machined parts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Trainee
Operates a CNC lathe or Mill to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications and in accordance with work procedures.
Starts and stops the machine in accordance with operating procedures.
Loads and unloads the machine with work pieces during the machining process, as specified in the instructions.
Performs all types of inspection checks as directed.
Maintains quality standards as described on the I & I sheet.
Replaces drills and standard inserts and makes tooling offsets under supervision.
Uses the 3 container system, production tags, and other production systems and provides the appropriate records and report documentation.

Level I
Operates one or more CNC lathes or mills and maintains daily production standards.
Performs inspection checks with minimal supervision including all plug gage, micrometer, flush pin gage, snap gage, work gage, and comparator checks.
Maintains quality standards as described on the I & I sheet, and maintains established production standards; notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
Replaces all drills and standard tooling and makes all offset changes with minimal supervision.
Adjusts machine feeds and speeds and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications where automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.

Level II
Operates one or more CNC lathes or mills and maintains daily production standards.
Performs inspection checks without supervision.
Maintains quality standards as described on the I & I sheet and maintains established production standards.
Replaces all tooling and makes offset changes without supervision.
Diagnoses daily production problems and makes necessary corrections with minimal supervision.
Performs resets of jobs that have been previously run in accordance with set-up standards.
Assists in departmental training as required and performs minor "troubleshooting regarding tool changes and offsets.

General
Cleans machines, tools, and machine areas as required.
Utilizes statistical process control techniques in operating the machines in accordance with experience and training.
Participates in Total Quality Management (TQM) and TS-16949 Teams to improve product quality and system effectiveness.
Observes all safety and housekeeping rules and procedures and supports and encourages safety and good housekeeping throughout the company; takes immediate action on safety related issues.
Supports Management Policies, and Procedures; cooperates with and supports other company employees; and works reliably and flexibly to meet departmental, company, and customer needs and objectives including quality, service, and productivity.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

High school graduate or GED or the equivalent level knowledge and capability in reading, writing, physics, technology fundamentals, communications, and applied mathematics (shop math). A trade school education with co-op experience and knowledge in machine shop technology, shop math, blueprint reading, and measurement instruments preferred.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and physical dexterity including proficiency in determining spatial relationships pertaining to machines, tools, and machined parts.
Six months to three years experience for a Level I and II operator.
Requires a working knowledge in CNC machine operations, blueprint reading, measurement equipment utilization, cutting tool geometry, basic CNC programming, machine maintenance, quality control and statistical process control.
Requires skills and competencies commensurate with the requirement to train other personnel on an as needed basis.
