POSITION: Certified Nursing Assistant I/ Patient Care Unit

REPORTS TO: Registered Nurse on Duty/ Patient Care Unit Coordinator/Vice President of Nursing Services

FLSA STATUS: o non- exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for administering direct patient care and performing any other duties deemed necessary to assure optimal patient care under direction and supervision of the professional nurse

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma required
  • Graduate of a Certified Assistant Training Program I
  • Current listing on NC State Registry
  • CPR certification
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the hospice philosophy of care
  • Ability to work on an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Willingness to work with patients/families regardless of race, color, creed, age or sexual orientation. Must respect their beliefs and philosophy with an attitude of openness and receptiveness
TRAINING-Initial And Ongoing:
  • Complete Hospice volunteer/staff training program
  • Complete Hospice orientation program
  • Obtain 12 hours of continuing education per year, including mandatory safety in-service
  • Attend minimum of six staff meetings per year
  • Maintain CPR certification
Requirements:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in orienting new team members, as requested
  • Participate in quality improvement program
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality
  • Adhere to safety policy and practices
  • Complete employee time record accurately per policy
  • Cooperate with all government agencies and outside auditors
  • Assist with updating policies and procedures, as appropriate
  • Complete annual TB screening
  • Assure all license, certifications, continuing education information and any other required documentation is submitted to human resources and keep current
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation required andspecified in Hospice policy and procedure
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
  • Assist patients to achieve maximum self-reliance in activities of daily living
  • Understand principles of nutrition and meal preparation in dying process
  • Follow all infection control procedures
  • Administer daily care in an efficient safe manner:
- AM and PM care

- Assist with ambulation

- Assist with diets/special nourishments

- Cook breakfast for Kirkwood patients, as requested

- Dress and undress patients providing privacy

- Change bed linen as needed
  • Perform duties safely and accurately, documenting results appropriately:
- Special skin care

- Collect specimens

- Intake and output

- Vital signs

- Enemas

- Other duties as assigned by charge nurse, within scope of responsibilities, as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing
  • Allow patient and family members to express feelings and concerns
  • Refer problems or concerns to appropriate team member
  • Observe patient's condition and report immediately any problems, symptoms or unusual occurrences to RN
  • Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient
  • Answer patient call light promptly
  • Accept and complete special assignments efficiently
  • Assist other staff in completion of their duties
  • Maintain constant vigilance over patients
  • Take necessary safety precautions:
- Side rails up as necessary

- Call light within reach

- Bed in lowest position
  • Maintain patient's room in a neat, orderly manner with clear walking area
  • Assure patient/facility laundry is appropriately cleaned and restocked
  • Assist with cleaning patient rooms, as needed
  • Make provisions for patient and family privacy at all times
  • Assist in home care as directed by supervisor
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Speech and hearing skills necessary for telephone interaction and face to face contact
  • Visual acuity to read chart and physician'sorders
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate patient care supplies
  • With assistance, ability to lift and support an average of 150 pounds
  • Ability to sit as required to perform duties
  • Ability to pull/push, and bend frequently
  • Ability to squat, kneel, climb, and balance
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have an automobile with required insurance coverage and a state driver's license
