Clinical Nurse Educator This job description is not to be construed as a complete listing of the duties and responsibilities that may be given to any employee. Summary: The Clinical Nurse Educator Nurse provides expertise in practice, development, education, quality, process improvement, and clinical leadership for the healthcare team, patients and family members in a patient care area. Works in collaboration with the Professional Development Specialist (PDS) and assigned unit Nurse Manager to coordinate and perform educational activities that promote the competency and development of ROH nursing staff, including orientation, competency validation, in-service, and continuing education. Acts as a clinical resource for staff and the leadership team to elevate practice and expedite the transition of student and newly graduated nurses from novice to competent nurses via the roles of educator, facilitator, mentor, and clinician. Education Requirement: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher, or can provide proof of current enrollment in a RN to BSN program. Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the adult, adolescent, pediatric, neonate and/or geriatric patient as specialty assignment dictates. Experience Requirement: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in caring for patients in unit of hire. Educator/instructor experience preferred. Licensure/Certification Requirement: Registered Nurse licensure to work in state of TN. Current BLS required, ACLS, PALS, Neonatal, Trauma, and/or ABLS certification required based on area of assignment. Key Job Responsibilities: Support nurse externs and residents education and transition into their professional role; assist nurse externs and residents with unit operations; and provide clinical leadership for nurse externs and residents. Assists with education for new nursing hires during the onboarding and orientation period. Collaborate and support Unit Manager. Participates in nurse extern and resident interviews. Meet new hire for lunch as scheduled during onboarding and provides tour of area. Serves as the point of contact to ensure new hires have appropriate access. Ensures new hires understand orientation requirements and serves as point of contact when tasks completed. Meet with unit leadership to discuss documentation trends to determine staff training and remediation opportunities. Models excellence and advanced nursing practice through the utilization of evidence-based process and lifelong learning. Acts as a clinical resource for staff and the leadership team to elevate practice and professionalism. Ensures processes, policies, staff performance, and development activities are consistent with current, recognized practice guidelines and regulatory standards. Promotes and facilitates continuous learning and development of staff through mentorship, coaching, modeling, and instruction using multiple learning modalities. Collaborates with the assigned PDS to develop and update content appropriately. Coordinates staff orientation to insure successful, expedient transition to independent practice through ongoing evaluation of orientation structure, preparation and effectiveness of preceptors, and progression of new hires. Collaborates with the Nurse Residency Coordinator and unit leadership to ensure scheduling availability of educational opportunities, including Hurst Review and Nurse Residency sessions. Provides direction and support to clinical staff in clinical decision making, priority setting, resuscitation, stabilization, crisis intervention, and disaster preparedness and response. Maintains educational and competency records in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards. Partners with the assigned PDS to evaluate the effectiveness of courses/programs. Communicates opportunities to modify curriculum and course content as needed to improve learning outcomes and ensure currency with current knowledge/science to the assigned PDS. Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established care models; monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters. All Clinical Nurse Educators will be required to work one 12hr shift in their respective clinical area per month. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability and willingness to apply nursing knowledge and skills and maintain clinical competency as required in assigned area. Demonstrated interpersonal and collaboration abilities for working within a team environment. Ability to manage a sometimes-chaotic work environment related to changing patient needs. Physical Demands/Conditions: Prolonged standing and walking; lifting, turning patients and equipment; repeated bending, squatting and stooping; exposure to infectious agents. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials, and to administer and accurately prepare medications. Heavy Work - Exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
