DEFINITION: Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the technical operations of a clinical microbiology laboratory. Essential Job Functions + Consults with medical supervision or attending physician staff members to identify microbiological tests considered necessary to aid in the diagnosis of patient illness in a particular hospital setting. + Analyzes requests for microbiological tests and determines what resources are necessary for their performance at various frequencies in terms of personnel, equipment, materials, and other items of supply. + Decides whether the capability required for test performance at a projected frequency exists in-house and/or what action is necessary to produce such capability; initiates, with approval of medical supervisor, appropriate action to install tests in-house or arrange for performance at another laboratory. + Determines what specific equipment, media, and other materials and supplies will be used in the performance of individual microbiological test procedures. + Establishes the scope and nature of the quality control procedures necessary to assure the accuracy and reliability of test results, and continually monitors the performance of such procedures to assure their effectiveness. + Analyzes and interprets laboratory data, maintains records under required standards for the laboratory, and prepares oral and written reports. + Plans, develops, and conducts an on-going program of education and consultation with the attending physician staff and other healthcare professional staff to develop and increase their awareness and understanding of microbiology laboratory capabilities, resolve specific problems of microbial infection, and prevent epidemiological infection within the hospital. + Complies with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. + Serves as a member of various hospital committees including the Infection Control, Antibiotic Stewardship, and Infectious Disease committee to establish and maintain clinical microbiology practices. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A doctoral degree in medical microbiology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university-AND-One year of experience at the level of a Clinical Microbiologist I, assisting a clinical microbiologist supervisor to plan organize, direct, and evaluate the technical operations of a clinical microbiology laboratory or equivalent in an approved clinical laboratory . An approved laboratory is defined as:A clinical laboratory that has a federal issued Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment Laboratory Certificate of Accreditation that authorizes the laboratory to accept human specimens for the purpose of performing laboratory examinations. LICENSE: Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or a Clinical Microbiologist Scientist issued by the California Department of Public Health. Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Provide the title of your required license, the certificate number, date of issue, date of expiration, and the name of the issuing agency for the required license as specified in the selection requirements -OR- applicants must attach a legible photocopy of the license issued at the time of filing or email a copy to the analyst within 7 calendar days from the date of filing your application online. All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted, or your application will not be accepted. Applicants claiming experience in a state other than California must provide their Clinical Laboratory Scientist License Number from that state on the application at the time of filing. PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: This class requires light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Additional points will be awarded to candidates who possess the following desirable qualifications: + Additional experience at the level of a Clinical Microbiologist I, assisting a clinical microbiologist supervisor to plan organize, direct, and evaluate the technical operations of a clinical microbiology laboratory- in excess of the minimum requirements. + Experience as a Committee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP) fellow in Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology. + An American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) certification issued by the American Society for Microbiology. To receive credit for your ABMM certification(s), you must attach a copy to your application at the time of filing or email a copy to the analyst within seven (7) calendar days of filing online. Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added on the eligible register. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications will be processed on an"as received"basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly. The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility. NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
