Job Summary:

Responsible for nursing care for patients, including assessments, treatment, and medical care under the supervision of physicians and physician extenders. Along with nursing duties, responsible for the day-to-day supervision of nurses within specific protocols.

Essential Functions:
  • Obtain, verify and record health history of patients. Gather pertinent health data through physical assessments. Room patients.
  • Provide basic patient care as ordered by providers.
  • Administer medications, which may include subcutaneous or intramuscular injections, and treatments as directed by physicians or physician extenders.
  • Assist providers in performing exams, procedures and treatments.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to include cleaning exam rooms between patients, sterilizing equipment and supplies, using germicides.
  • Accurately and completely document assessments, interventions, patient/family responses, medications dispensed/prescribed and test results in medical record.
  • Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
  • May be required to perform phlebotomy duties.
  • Educate and instruct patients about self-administered medications.
  • Promote wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions.
  • Order, sort and store supplies and restock exam rooms.
  • Answer telephone calls and messages from patients to include relaying instructions to patients or family members and provide pertinent information.
  • Accurately relay prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include sending or receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab, x-ray, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms for pre-certifications and/or preauthorization for medication and/or procedures.
  • Check with providers daily before leaving to ensure all duties and tasks have been completed.
  • Participate in the hiring, non-clinical supervision, and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Assist in assessing the changing staffing needs and scheduling adequate coverage.
  • Provide professional and technical support to staff and troubleshoot the delivery of patient care.
  • Identify training needs for nursing staff. Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of training, orientation, and education programs.
  • Assist with implementing, monitoring and evaluating quality assurance activities and compliance with laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Recommend new and/or revises policies and procedures.
  • Maintain department metrics and report to Administration.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
  • Promote a professional image by adhering to the established dress code as listed in Employee Handbook.
  • Check and resolve assigned tasks in EMR program.
  • Other duties as assigned by Administration.
  • Assist co-workers as needed to include providing staffing coverage as needed.
  • Recognize when others are in need of assistance, information or directions and offer to help when able, or find someone who can.
  • Responsible for neatness of work area to include stocking and cleaning. Be productive when faced with any "down time" during work hours.
  • Maintain emotional control and diplomacy at all times.
  • Maintain open and positive lines of communication.
  • Consistently report to work on time, begins work promptly and perform duties for entire scheduled shift.
  • Maintain absenteeism within company policy.
  • Notify Administration of absences and tardiness in a timely manner.
  • Read new policies and documents as instructed.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate sensible and efficient use of equipment and supplies by limiting waste, spoilage or damage.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies and functions. Understanding of documentation standards.
  • Knowledge of equipment, supplies and materials needed for medical treatment. Understanding of basic laboratory procedures including preparation and screening.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease management and control and safety standards.

Skills:
  • Skill in reading and following written and oral medical orders.
  • Skill in initiating appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Skill in handling a number of tasks simultaneously.
  • Skill in computers. Type at least 40 WPM.
  • Skill in training both new and existing staff members.

Abilities:
  • Ability to use manual dexterity to perform medical treatments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for drug dosages.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with many different levels of staff.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with nursing, clinical, and support staff, providers, and Administration.

Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree or higher preferred.
  • Current RN license
  • Computer experience, especially with an Electronic Medical Records system, required.
  • Clinic experience required, supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to sit, perform data entry and view computer screen for long periods at a time.
  • Daily standing, walking, bending, and maneuvering.
  • May require lifting up to 50 pounds or more to transfer and/or turn patient with and without assistive devices.

Environmental Conditions:
  • Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

Travel:
Travel may be required.

Scheduled Working Hours:
Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays. Hours may vary depending upon the needs of the position, department, and clinic.

Equipment Operated:

Computer, stethoscope, echocardiography (EKG) machine, automated external defibrillator (AED), blood pressure cuff, infusion equipment and other nursing items. May involve use of walkers, wheelchairs, and pulse oximetry and oxygen tanks.
