Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Basic Requirements:

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (ie, not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English

The role of this position is to provide patient care approximately 70% of the time and administrative duties approximately 30% of the time Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: a.
Leadership and Organizational Representation Demonstrates leadership in interpreting and supporting the VISN mission, vision and values, while operating in accordance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies, facility and VISN policies, and standards of federal and professional and accrediting agencies external to the VHA.

Adheres to the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations as set forth by the medical staff.
3.
Participates/reviews and documents performance improvement activities, including, but not limited to external review programs, internal peer review programs, and accreditation requirements.
4.
Identifies "Best Practices" both within and outside VISN 1 and exports to wider community or imports for use within the Medical Center.
5.
Participates in the strategic planning process and incorporates a "view for the future" in the Radiology Service plan.
6.
Participates in developing an annual budget for the Radiology Service.
7.
Recommends privileging requirements for the performance of radiologic procedures, based on training and/or experience, current competence and health status, as well as consideration of any information related to medical malpractice allegations or judgments, loss of medical staff membership, loss and/or reduction of clinical privileges, or challenges to licensure.

Reviews all request for initial and renewal credentials and clinical privileges and making recommendations regarding appointment and privileging action.
The Chief of Radiology Service must maintain performance data on all physicians and use this data in recommending renewal of privileges.
Physician performance data includes competency review of interpretations, personal workload, maintenance of certification, and participation/attendance in quality improvement activities.

Establishes plans and policies which are consistent with federal regulations, VHA Directives, and The Joint Commission standards.
Physician productivity: Monitors the productivity of radiologists to ensure the average workload of the service meets VHA defined benchmarks, and develops corrective plans if it does not.
10.
Chairs service meetings and is responsible for advising staff members of the recommendations and implications of Clinical Executive Board, Clinical Service Chiefs and Resource Board actions as they concern the service and Medical Center.
11.
Assists the Chief of Staff in the enforcement of the policies of the Medical Center Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations of the staff.
12.
Serves on hospital committees and task forces, both standing and ad hoc, as appropriate.
13.
Incumbent will occasionally need to travel to national and VISN level meetings and visit CBOCs.
