JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Nursing Officer practices within the scope of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, high quality, individualized nursing care, based upon knowledge and experience, the nursing process and leadership skills. Provides overall leadership, administration, and coordination of patient care and nursing services and leads the development, management, and growth of major service lines. The Chief Nursing Officer serves as an advocate for quality patient care, hospitality and service excellence.

The position includes responsibility for planning, coordinating, controlling, directing, and evaluating patient care and nursing services and the personnel responsible for the delivery of those services. The

Chief Nursing Officer is an officer of the organization, and a member of the executive team serving as a resource to clinical staff, administrators, the community, physicians and nursing. Adheres to the mission, values and philosophy of WSMC.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ten years progressive leadership and management experience in a hospital, and are clinically credible as well.
  2. Must possess self-confidence, creativity, political sensitivity, good business judgment, and be highly personable, upbeat and energetic.
  3. Must possess strong human relations, leadership, communication (including listening), negotiating, financial management, risk taking, and team building/leading skills.
  4. The ability to create and achieve a desired future state (vision) through influence of organizational values, individual group goals, reinforcement and systems.
  5. The ability to effectively explore alternatives to reach outcomes that gain the support and acceptance of all parties.
  6. Must have and be able to use knowledge of systems, situation, procedures and culture inside the organization to identify potential organizational problems and opportunities; perceiving the impact and implications of decisions on other components of the organization.
  7. Must be prone to actions and follow through when change is needed and understand the emotional and practical impact on people.
  8. Extensive knowledge of Joint Commission requirements.

JOB DUTIES

  1. Responsible for the development and implementation of standards of practice within areas of responsibility including all areas providing nursing care in order to enhance quality and assure compliance with regulatory agencies. Ensures that standards of patient care and standards of practice are consistent with current research findings and nationally recognized professional standards. Incorporate the findings of current research and other literature into the policies and procedures governing the provision of care.
  2. Responsible for oversight of the quality improvement activities for areas of responsibility, including but not limited to participation in teams, use of internal and external quality methodology and benchmarks data. Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff and clinical areas in planning, promoting and conducting organization wide performance improvement activities.
  3. Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic plans, goals, and objectives within areas of responsibility including all areas providing nursing care in order to provide vision and direction and achieve strategic outcomes, represents the profession of nursing and patient care services in the development of institutional strategic plan.
  4. Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of operating and capital budgets for areas of responsibility in order to assure financial viability, smooth operation of departments and delivery of cost-effective quality patient care.
  5. Conceptualizes, develops, and implements effective plans and programs for new and existing service lines, including technical operations, customer services, marketing, case management, personnel and facilities management, to assure high patient/physician/staff satisfaction and quality services.
  6. Promotes and practices in an environment that fosters two-way communication between those in leadership and those providing hands-on-care. Provides appropriate resources, education, communication, and counsel so that leaders and staff in all areas of responsibility provide excellent service and development professionally.
  7. Responsible for the selection, development and evaluation of leaders within the areas of responsibility in order to assure the most effective leadership for the staff, the achievement of organizational goals, quality outcomes and customer satisfaction.
  8. Drives patient, employee, and physician satisfaction so that the entity is the provider and employer of choice.
  9. Promotes and evaluates work redesign including practice guidelines, within areas of responsibility including all areas providing nursing care in order to proactively respond to the changing, health care environment and assure the entities leadership position as the preferred quality, cost effective provider of healthcare.
  10. Oversees the ongoing evaluation of those programs, processes, and outcomes developed across the WSMC continuum of care.
