JOB SUMMARY Ensures the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedures. Monitor PAR levels of all surgical instruments and supplies. Coordinates the overall cleaning, decontamination, assembly and dispensing of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies needed for daily surgical/endoscopy procedures. Assist physician with endoscopy procedures. Reports to OR Director. Non-Exempt position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Has knowledge of surgical instruments and an understanding of the procedures being performed in order to anticipate the surgeon's needs. Sets up the operating room with the proper instruments for the procedure, helps prep patients, assist with draping and pass surgical tools and supplies to the surgeon during the operation. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves Handles medications on the field in accordance with policy and procedure. During preparation of room: the room is prepared in a timely manner, with anticipation of any extra needed instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual procedure. Initiates tech-physician communication as appropriate to include updating the surgeon's preference cards. Transfers patients to procedure room table. Ensures that the surgical field is maintained throughout the entire case at the highest standard. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants Accurately completes surgical counts (i.e., instruments, sponges, needles, etc.) follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to the RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately. Keeps count of the sponges and equipment used to make sure nothing is left in the open wound. Participates in all time-out procedures prior to the beginning of all procedures Ensures that all specimens are handled appropriately on and off the sterile field and in accordance with hospital policy. Assist RN and the anesthesia personnel transfer patients to recovery. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures. Is responsible for expediting turnovers between cases with team-members. Follows proper procedure to report any damaged product/equipment/instrumentation. Assist with daily case picking/pulling, restocking post cases, and organization of equipment for storage when use is completed. Understands the staffing matrix to maintain/improve unit productivity. In collaboration with the RN ensure that all charges are correctly accounted for and all implants are documented correctly. Ensures adequate stock of supplies are maintained and at PAR level. This includes checking for out dates as scheduled and rotation of stock. Checks in supplies from Materials Management and puts stock away. Ensures that all equipment is properly functioning and in working order for use. Notifies appropriate departments of any equipment not in proper working order and completes work orders. Takes after-hours and weekend call for emergency surgeries and/or procedures. When functioning in the role of surgical assisting technologist, the technologists assist the surgeon by carrying out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue. Other duties include but not limited to: holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon, sponges or suctions operative site, applies electrocautery to claps on bleeders, cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon, connects drains to drain devices, applies dressings and skin. Performs other duties as assigned. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Certified Surgical Technologist Current BLS for healthcare provider's certification required. Certification as a Central Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) within 18 months, which includes the Sterile Processing and Endoscope Reprocessing (CER and CRCST) course certifications through IAHCSMM or CBSPD. Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the Operating Room preferred.
