CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check. PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months. CLASS DESCRIPTION A Carpenter I installs and repairs structural woodwork such as doors, windows and floors, and basic wooden furnishings following the directions of a skilled carpenter. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a carpentry shop or at other locations in City buildings where the employee is exposed to such conditions as extremes of temperature, dust, noise, vibrations and hazardous machinery. Work requires moderate physical exertion. SELECTION PROCESS All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must: EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certification. AND EXPERIENCE: Have one (1) year of experience in carpentry work. OR EQUIVALENCIES: Six (6) months of additional experience in carpentry work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement. Completion of one (1) year of the required coursework in a carpentry curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six (6) months of the experience requirement. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management. A Baltimore City driver's license is required within one year of employment. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of carpentry terminology, techniques and procedures. Knowledge of materials used in carpentry. Knowledge of safety practices and fire prevention regulations pertaining to the performance of carpentry work. Ability to make accurate measurements. Ability to work from blueprints, plans or sketches. Ability to use common woodworking tools, equipment and machinery such as wood chisels, planes, wood bits, hand and power saws. Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on carpentry tools, equipment and machinery.
