Base Pay: $15.49 Hourly . SUMMARY: Performs general maintenance and service of the Veterans Cemetery. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Completes burial processes and performs maintenance, repair and servicing of grounds, building and infrastructure elements. Assists in the preparation, open and closing of in-ground burials. Transports casketed remains from committal shelter to gravesite. Places/secures cremations in niches and installs niche covers. Assists in the installation, maintenance and care of grave markers and headstones. Performs grounds maintenance activities to include grave leveling, sod establishments, turf mowing and edging, tree and shrub trimming, fertilizing and watering, care of flower beds and removing garbage. Performs the maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, fences, walls, ornamental/memorial benches and monuments, roads, signage and other infrastructure elements. Assists in the repair, maintenance and servicing of small engine and power equipment. Records and submits daily, weekly and monthly records, reports and/or logs as needed. Operates tractors, mowers, hand tools, portable pumps, generators and other equipment. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms. Cleans vehicles assigned to Veterans Cemetery. Installs light bulbs in Veterans Cemetery buildings, repairs light fixtures and ballasts. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school or GED plus one year of maintenance and repair work experience. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members of the public and other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Texas driver license. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of repair and maintenance techniques. Ability to use various hand operated equipment. Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. Ability to perform arduous physical duties under adverse conditions.
