JOB SUMMARY:Performs blacksmith duties if horses have related problems after arriving at the paddockDIRECTLY SUPERVISES: None KEY JOB FUNCTIONS: Available in the paddock during racing hours to perform any blacksmith duties that may be required on horses which arrive at the paddock with shoe problems. Checks the type of shoes that each horse wears in a turf race to ensure that they conform to the rules. Checks for the use of mud caulks on off tracks and sees that information is passed on through proper channels to be related to the public. Will abide by all safety requirements as outlined in the Safety Manual or as required by individual departments and/or job functions. Other duties as assigned EDUCATIONS and/or EXPERIENCE:High school education; or up to one year related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must be able to obtain and maintain a license from the Indiana Horse Racing Commission.PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
