Job Summary: The Full-Time School Nurse at Bishop Noll Institute is responsible for managing all aspects of the school's health and wellness programs, ensuring the well-being of students, and promoting a healthy and safe environment. The position also requires the individual to maintain student attendance records while working to create a pleasant and helpful atmosphere for staff, students, parents, and visitors. The school nurse will collaborate with school administrators to support the overall health and wellness of the school community.

Accountability: The nurse is hired by the principal and is accountable to the Assistant Principal of Student Life and principal. The nurse is expected to abide by the policies and procedures of the Diocese of Gary, the Office of Catholic Schools, and the directives of the principal and Assistant Principal of Student Life. The nurse pursues continuing education and professional development and participates in an annual performance review as outlined by the Office of Catholic Schools.

Essential Responsibilities Nurse:
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date health records for all students.
  • Enters health-related information into the school's database, CHIRP.
  • Works with the Athletic Department to confirm compliance with all required physicals.
  • Generates reports as needed by school administration.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all health matters.
  • Administers prescribed medications to students following medical orders and school policies.
  • Maintains a secure and organized system for storing and properly dispensing medication.
  • Provides Professional Development to staff on proper procedures when appropriate.
  • Develops and implements health wellness programs that promote overall well-being for students, staff, and parents.
  • Organizes and participates in health-related events, workshops, or initiatives.
  • Responds promptly to medical emergencies on school property.
  • Works with the Assistant Principal on the School Safety Plan to assure students' health and well-being are accounted for.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers, emergency services, and parents to ensure a coordinated response to health-related incidents.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, staff, and students regarding health concerns, medications, and wellness initiatives.
  • Collaborates with teachers, counselors, and administrators to address health-related concerns affecting students' academic performance.
  • Stays current with best practices in school nursing and health education.
  • Attends relevant conferences and training sessions to enhance nursing skills and knowledge.

  • Essential Responsibilities: Attendance
  • Utilizes positive human relationship skills with administration, staff, parents, students, and all visitors.
  • Follows procedures when making and receiving telephone calls, takes messages, and routes calls.
  • Maintains proper procedures and policies when allowing students or visitors into the building.
  • Enters all student attendance records into a web-based application.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, teachers, and parents regarding attendance rules and absences.
  • Manages and updates spreadsheets on a daily basis.
  • Compiles and submits a variety of daily, weekly, monthly, and year-end reports as required.
  • Admits late students and maintains records of their tardiness.
  • Shares and assists in archiving medical documentation between the school nurse and the athletic department.
  • Oversees the student Sign Out process and maintains records of student absence.
  • Types, prepares, distributes, and files records, reports, and correspondence related to attendance.
  • Operates standard office equipment, e.g., computer, fax, telephone, and MacBook.
  • Works closely with the Admissions Office and Assistant Principal of Student Life to maintain accurate records in our School Information System (SIS).
  • Provides updated student information to the administration, counseling department, admissions director, records department, and/or faculty as needed.
  • Provides coverage for the school secretary during lunch breaks or absence.
  • Records and completes daily student attendance. Validates all student absences by 9:30 am for school effectiveness.
  • Generates and distributes daily student attendance reports to school staff and administration by 9:30 am.
  • Composes emails and/or phone calls to parents regarding student attendance issues.
  • Notifies the Assistant Principal of students with excessive absences and/or tardies.
  • Collects and files absentee notes from parents in student files.
  • Prepares students' attendance files for court appearances.
  • Provides clerical support for administrators and other office personnel when needed.

  • QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid Indiana license.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field (preferred).
  • Previous experience in school nursing or pediatric nursing.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations for educational institutions.
  • Ideally candidate would speak English and Spanish

  • Ability to operate desktop computers and laptops.
  • Proficiency with web-based applications, including Google Sheets.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all related corporation policies and state requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to lift and pull or push articles up to 50 pounds. He/she sits most of the time but must walk frequently and, at times, stand. The employee is required to reach with his/her hands and continuously repeat the same hand, arm, or finger motion many times as in typing. Manual and finger dexterity are essential to the job. He/she is constantly working to meet deadlines with severe time restraints. He/she must see and read fine print such as typed or handwritten materials and have good depth perception (fine muscle control). The employee must also be able to hear conversations in a noisy environment and communicate clearly and concisely through speech.
