Codexis, a biotechnology company based in Redwood City, CA, is looking to hire a Bioprocess Development Research Associate III.
Codexis is a leading enzyme engineering company leveraging its proprietary CodeEvolver technology platform to discover, develop and enhance novel, high-performance enzymes and other classes of proteins. About the Opportunity: The Research Associate III is a part of the Downstream Bioprocess Development department and responsible for designing, performing, and analyzing experiments to establish, understand, and optimize enzyme purification processes. The Research Associate will also be responsible for communicating technical data and contributing to tech transfer activities for external manufacturing of cutting-edge enzymes for nucleic acid synthesis.   • Experience with protein purification and analysis, including chromatography, bioprocess filtration (depth filtration, TFF), and scale-up.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate results and seek assistance when needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to keep organized records and documentation.
  • A collaborative and safety-first mindset in a lab environment.

In this role you will be responsible for:
  • Hands-on protein purification and downstream process development at scales from 0.1-50 L.
  • Primary recovery unit operations from microbial hosts such as centrifugation, homogenization, flocculation, tangential-flow filtration, and depth filtration.
  • Chromatographic separations, including ion-exchange, affinity, and hydrophobic interaction using AKTA Avant and Pilot systems.
  • Unit operation optimization, scale-up, and support for tech transfer workflows.
  • Characterizing in-process and purified proteins to support process development, including SDS-PAGE, UV-Vis, colorimetric assays, HPLC, SEC-MALS, DLS, etc.
  • Working with a scientific mentor to execute planned experiments and document results.
  • Designing experiments, thorough documentation (electronic lab notebook and batch production records), organizing data, and communicating results within the bioprocess development team.

The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biological Science, Chemical or Biomolecular Engineering, or related discipline, with 3+ years industry experience in hands-on protein purification and analysis, OR Master's degree with 0-3 years industry experience.
  • Hands-on experience with chromatographic protein purification (e.g. affinity, ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction) using AKTA or other FPLC systems.
  • Strong understanding of protein biochemistry as it applies to purification and enzyme characterization.
  • Experience characterizing proteins using analytical methods such as activity assays, SDS-PAGE, HPLC, DLS, etc.
Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes:
  • Hands-on experience with protein recovery from microbial hosts, bioprocess filtration (e.g. TFF, depth filtration), flocculation, and/or non-chromatographic separations.
  • Experience with high-throughput purification and/or analytical methods (including Design of Experiments).
  • Experience with lyophilization and/or spray dry process development.
CODEXIS PAY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Redwood City is $92,250 to $112,500. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Codexis is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states .
