About the Opportunity: The Bioprocess Development Fermentation Scientist II will join our Upstream Bioprocess Development team and will be responsible for the design, execution, and development of fermentation processes. The person will lead fermentation projects within the group and collaborate cross functionally with members of the Technical Operations team. The position will be on-site in Redwood City. In this role you will be responsible for:
  • Development of new fermentation bioprocesses utilizing E. coli as an expression host for production of enzymes.
  • Hands-on running bench-scale fermentors, performing bench experiments to better characterize fermentation processes.
  • Contribute to the authorship of tech transfer packages and transferring processes to CRO/CMOs.
  • Following safety best practices and leading implementation of new safety processes.
  • Routinely present technical information to various audiences both internal and external to Bioprocess Development.

The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, or related discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience; M.S or B.S. with at least 8-10 years relevant experience, respectively.
  • Previous hands-on experience with bench scale fed-batch fermentation systems, supporting equipment, and supporting analytics.
  • Sound understanding of recombinant protein expression systems and microbial physiology in the context of fermentation.
  • Experience with design of experiments, data analysis, and exposure to graphical and statistical software (JMP, R, Python, or similar).
  • Experience in a fermentation project leadership role.

Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes:
  • Familiarity of stainless steel fermentation systems and high throughput fermentation systems.
  • Hands-on experience with primary recovery of enzymes and knowledge of downstream purification unit operations.
  • Previous experience with scale-up of fermentation processes and working with and providing oversight to CRO/CMOs.
  • Experience with developing new assays to support bioprocess workflows.
  • People management experience in a bioprocess development environment.

CODEXIS PAY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Redwood City is $140,000 to $152,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Codexis is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states .
