Associate System Operator

This role involves diving into the heart of the energy sector as a System Operator Trainee. Guided by an experienced System Operator, you'll be at the forefront of managing Balancing Authority (BA), Generator Owner (GO), and Generator Operator (GOP) operations. Operating from the dynamic environment of a Network Operations Center (NOC), you'll actively contribute to asset optimization, real-time monitoring, and forward-thinking forecasting.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform real-time operation of the Company's balancing authorities, generation projects, and scheduling of third-party energy resources.
  • Ensure grid reliability and compliance with NERC, WECC, Alberta Reliability Standards, and AESO ISO rules.
  • Economically operate generation based on guidelines from NERC, Regional Council Policies, FERC Standards of Conduct.
  • Provide support in switching, alarm response, dispatching, and other areas as directed by the System Operator.
  • Complete training to become fully qualified within 6 months and operate the transmission system under department policies and NERC standards.
  • Ensure safe, reliable, and economic operation of facilities, balancing authorities, and generation projects.
  • Support operations and maintenance activities, managing plant availability and reliability.
  • Coordinate equipment outages, monitor environmental protection activities, and maintain proper voltage levels on the transmission system.
  • Responsible for third-party generation dispatch and scheduling services.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

Compliance and Other Functions:

  • Ensure compliance with NERC and WECC reliability standards, implementing new standards with the Compliance Team.
  • Support the implementation and use of Generation Management and Energy Management systems.
  • Monitor and assist with switching operations and procedures.
  • Review company logging and work safety procedures, providing feedback for NOC operations.
  • Support Asset Management and Environmental goals through cooperation with the VP, Asset Management.
  • Serve as a liaison between reliability entities and commercial partners.

Performance Expectations:

  • Operate company interconnected generation assets reliably and safely according to NERC and WECC standards.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of NERC Operating Standards by passing the NERC Reliability or Balancing Interchange Certification exam.
  • Maintain a high level of customer focus, ensuring accurate and timely communication of system events and outage information.
  • Follow department procedures and effectively communicate with field personnel.

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
  • 0 to 1 year of experience in electric operations.
  • Must obtain and maintain NERC certification at the reliability coordinator or Balancing Interchange level.
  • Technical knowledge related to the operation of the interconnected bulk electric system.
  • Problem-solving, resourcefulness, and analytical skills.

  • Solid analytical skills and effective emergency operations management.
  • Adaptable to change, capable of making prudent decisions in time-compressed environments.
  • Excellent computer capabilities and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Working Conditions:

  • Company BA and GOP OC in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
  • CIP-compliant environment with limited access protocols.
  • On-call availability for 24-hour operations.
  • 12.5-hour shifts, with additional flex time work scheduling as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
