The Department of Psychiatry is now recruiting an Associate or Full Specialist. Under the general direction of Dr. Lee, the person in this role will contribute to scientific-research programs and research-projects for the UCSF OCD Program relating to developing and testing personalized, circuit-targeted deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for severe treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder using advanced brain mapping strategies. We seek an associate specialist who will assist in performing acquisition of human imaging and brain recordings, data analysis, and assist with regulatory aspects of this DBS project.

Responsibilities will include: Contributing to the progress of research processes/strategies; analysis supporting, including time/frequency analysis of large-scale and longitudinal human electrophysiological data, peripheral physiological data, and symptom reports. This person will employ machine learning techniques to develop and test models of neural representations of disease symptom states; contribution to regulatory submissions to IRB and FDA; communication with collaborators (industrial and nonindustrial); assist with patient recruitment, communication, and management throughout the trial; contribute materials to grant submissions; prepare conference presentations and academic publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Specialist- Master's or equivalent degree in research-based science (e.g. Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related fields) or five to ten years of relevant experience.
  • Full Specialist- Terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in research-based science (e.g. Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related fields) or ten or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with patients in a psychiatric setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical research, signal processing, time series analyses, EEG/ECoG/iEEG, advanced statistics, Python, brain stimulation therapies, neural modelling, biomarker development, and brain stimulation and recording techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the design and successful completion and troubleshooting of experiments, data analysis and reporting.
  • Be an innovative and "out-of-the box" thinker who excels in novel discoveries in multidisciplinary fields.
  • Proven skills and experience in independently resolving broad problems that may arise in collection or analysis of laboratory data.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.
  • Proven ability to successfully work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrate high integrity
