POSITION TITLE : Associate Director, Strategic Sourcing

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director, Strategic Sourcing, leads a team of supply chain buyers specializing in scientific buying to maximize research funding for Scripps Research Principal Investigators. The Associate Director will work closely with the Supply Chain and Procure-to-Pay (P2P) teams to develop a comprehensive supply chain strategy to drive material reduction in lab-related costs, while ensuring continuous process improvement and risk mitigation.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced data-driven leader with expertise within the life sciences sector and possess strong negotiation skills and a deep understanding of the evolving scientific supplier landscape and related supply chain.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Develop and lead data-driven strategies to continuously optimize scientific supply chain efficiencies and ensure the seamless flow of materials.
  • Manage and mentor scientific sourcing team, emphasizing proactive strategic sourcing of research materials, goods, services, and equipment
  • Foster strong relationships with research stakeholders to align with their needs and priorities
  • Partner with the P2P and Supply Chain teams to achieve the team's overall vision, mission, and objectives.
  • Conduct comprehensive market research to inform category strategies, focusing on the evolving landscape of research material providers, and ensures the team translates internal data into actionable insights for research-related sourcing
  • Champion supplier diversity and sustainability initiatives, aligning sourcing strategies with ethical considerations and promoting sustainable procurement practices.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 7+ years of experience with managing complex sourcing, contracting, and regulatory issues in biopharmaceutical and/or biomedical industry scientific purchasing. Expertise in Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) required. Experience with Uniform Guidance (UG) a strong plus.
  • Proven leadership in managing large spend categories and related workflows, processes, analyses (e.g., total cost of ownership) and risk assessments
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the ability and willingness to roll up sleeves where necessary and desire to constantly improve the status quo
  • Experience building and managing highly collaborative and effective teams, as well as spearheading and shepherding organizational and / or process transformation.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills. Superior negotiation and project management abilities, including leading cross-functional teams.
  • Proficient in modern procurement and ERP systems. Experience with Jaggaer/Sci-Quest and Workday ERP is a strong plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Supply Chain Management, Finance, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Preferred certifications: CPM, CPSM, PMP, and Lean Six Sigma.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

COMPENSATON:

The expected hiring range for this position is $152,900 to $178,700/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
