Hood College is seeking a full time (12-month), tenure-track assistant professor of nutrition who will also serve as director for the newly-created graduate program in nutrition science. This new graduate program is part of the college's growing health science program and is one of the Future Educator Model (FEM) programs recently chosen by ACEND. Under the general supervision of the department chair of nursing, and in collaboration with the graduate school dean, the full-time program director is responsible for teaching in their area of expertise and overseeing the implementation of the graduate program in nutrition and dietetics which consists of three tracks: dietetics (culminating in eligibility for the Registered Dietitian credential), sustainability and general nutrition sciences. The preferred candidate will have program development, accreditation, and teaching/mentoring experience necessary to support the successful implementation of these degree tracks. Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Program Director (55% in year one; 20% thereafter) Serve as the primary ambassador, spokesperson, and recruiter for the college's master's degree programs in nutrition (all tracks); Establish a minimum of four preceptor sites for dietetics track within the nutrition graduate program with plans for growth based on enrollment; Investigate and apply for extramural funding opportunities for the graduate program; Support the graduate school on all recruitment and marketing efforts for the graduate program; Develop and oversee an assessment plan in alignment with the assessment culture at the College and in alignment with accreditation standards; Serve on the graduate council as program director and attend all meetings and workshops; Establish regional partnerships with the goal of identifying experiential learning opportunities for students and potential research opportunities for faculty; In partnership with the department chair, recruit qualified adjuncts to teach graduate courses in the nutrition program; Other job-related duties as assigned. Teaching (15%, year one; 50% thereafter) Demonstrate an ability/potential for quality teaching; Teach 6 credits (year one) in biology, nursing or related fields, at the undergraduate and graduate level; teach 15 credits annually thereafter; Plan courses, write syllabi and design assignments for each course to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements and assessment needs, utilizing a variety of teaching techniques; Present lectures, and supervise class activities, on topics appropriate to the course material; Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives; Critique performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, to facilitate skill building, to challenge students' assumptions, and to reinforce concepts, which must include practical application of new skills; Maintain weekly office hours, be available before and after class and be in contact with students as appropriate. Work with student to address problems and resolve issues; Determine grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and department as appropriate; Utilize digital and electronic platforms such as Blackboard and Chalk & Wire in instruction, record-keeping, and data collection; Other job-related duties as assigned. Scholarship/Professional Development (15%) Conduct, present and/or publish research in the field, ideally involving students; Participate in other scholarly activities in the field; Engage in ongoing professional development in the field, as well as in teaching/pedagogy. Service (15%) Serve as advisor or committee member for master's students; Advise graduate master's students enrolled in the nutrition program; Support and participate in college committees; Serve as an actively engaged member of the department. Education and/or Experience Minimum Requirements/Qualifications A doctoral degree in nutrition or related field; or an M.S. degree in a relevant field (plus five years of post-licensure experience); RD licensure required with a minimum of three years' teaching experience at an accredited 4-year institution; Knowledge of and ability to integrate computer/digital technology in the classroom; A strong service record and experience with committee and administrative duties. Preferred Skills and Characteristics administrative, program development, and ACEND accreditation experience preferred. Technology Skills Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications. Language Skills Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Mathematical Skills Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
