The Allied Activities Professional provides therapeutic recreational plans and programs for the adolescent residents of EMYL under the direction of the East Mt. Youth Lodge (EMYL) Activities Supervisor and EMYL Clinical Team. The allied activities may include different mediums (physical activity, art, yoga, dance, life skills, adventure-based activities). Assists and collaborates with other treatment team members (physicians, nursing staff, social workers, etc.) of the resident treatment team to formulate diagnosis, treatment plan, and discharge goals.


A day in the life of an Allied Activities Professional at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:


1. Supports the design, planning and facilitates a wide range of group and individual activities to meet the needs of the EMYL adolescent resident population. This could include a wide range of activities including the following: physical activity groups, art, life skills, adventure-based activities, dance, yoga and various other age-appropriate therapeutic activities.
2. Conducts an activities assessment on all residents upon admission.
3. Records treatment data and progress notes on the patient's charts.
4. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team planning meetings.
5. Assesses and participates in the ordering of necessary supplies/equipment for the department. Maintains the safe upkeep of various activity materials.
6. Ability to create enthusiasm with clients in terms of participation in therapies as well as the ability to use therapies as a bridge to obstacles in traditional therapy.
7. Participates in the orientation of new staff to unit policies and procedures throughout the orientation period.
8. Serves as a professional role model and demonstrates a willingness to share knowledge and skills with other Team Members.
9. Participates in the clinical activities of the team. Assists in problem-solving with clinical and administrative personnel. Communicates with department head, staff, physician, and team members.
9. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
10. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Minimum of 2 years of experience coordinating, planning, and leading activities for emotionally or mentally distured individuals.
3. Knowledge of team building skills and exercises.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Bachelor's in Sociology, Psychology, Recreational Therapy or related fields.


Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

1. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
