Duties - Performs inspection and troubleshooting on a variety of complete operational aircraft reciprocating or gas turbine engines in aircraft on the flightline, rebuilt or modified engines in test cells, or on the "penalty line" if correcting the defects will require extensive disassembly. - Removes, disassembles, repairs, modifies, reassembles, and reinstalls aircraft engines, their assemblies, and components to include Auxiliary Power Units. - Uses a variety of hand and power tools. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area. This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth. The incumbent must immediately report to his supervisor any significant medical threshold shifts in health status and/or medication requirements. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8600, Engine Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the installation, operation, and repair of gas turbine or reciprocating aircraft engines and accessory systems. 2. Knowledge of engine repair practices to identify and correctly choose between alternative methods and trade techniques, adapt accepted repair procedures to new or unfamiliar engines or accessory systems, to anticipate required tools and parts, and to set up the work area. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. 4. Knowledge of documentation procedures. 5. Skill in the use of measuring instruments such as vibration analyzers, pyrometers, and test benches. 6. Skill in the interpretation and use of technical orders, manufacturers' manuals, maintenance bulletins, and other technical information. Physical Effort: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must stand, stoop, bend, and reach. Frequently handles items weighing up to 1 0 pounds, and often lift and carry assemblies weighing up to 50 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other employees are available to assist when handling heavy or awkward items. May be required to climb steps and ladders and stand on slippery or inclined surfaces. Working Conditions: Work is performed outside or inside in areas that are drafty and noisy, such as aircraft hangars. Stands on concrete or hard composition floors for long periods of time. Frequently exposed to grease and solvents, to noise from drills and hammers, and to the possibility of cuts and abrasions from handling tools. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
