Job Summary This position is responsible for providing advising services to Gordon State College students to choose a degree program and follow a clear course sequence organized into a degree pathway to graduation. The Student Success Advisor provides year-round guidance and academic advising to students during their first 60 credit hours. Responsibilities Academic Advising Provides accurate and timely academic advisement to group of students per academic year. Monitors and tracks advisee progress during first 60 credit hours. Maintains correspondence with advisees via phone and email concerning appointments, deadlines, and other important matters. Assist students in major exploration and with referrals for career counseling. Assist assigned advisees with schedule changes as needed Build schedules for incoming first-year students after each NSO in a timely manner Plan and/or participate in academic skills workshops for students Audits student records for curriculum, major and graduation requirements. Retention Discusses implications of Satisfactory Academic Progress as relates to federal financial aid and assists students on warning or suspension with strategically determining how/when they might expect to return to satisfactory academic standing for funding purposes Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic exclusion and provides retention services for students. Student Success Data Collection, Management and Technology Keep accurate records of all advisees and advising sessions Assist with the collection and compilation of advising data Effectively utilize technology that supports advising practices Collaboration Participate in New Student Orientation (NSO) activities as needed Participate in a coordinated communication strategy with other departments such as enrollment services to raise awareness of registration and payment deadlines. Facilitate Early Alert interventions with assigned advisees through 60 credit hours Participate in outreach activities such as speaking to classes, presenting programs in LLCs and residence halls, and supporting recruitment activities Coordinate tutoring efforts across campus Campus Navigation Disseminates information on college policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc. Evaluates and determines potential course substitution requests for students entering with prior course credit. Professional Development Remain informed of current trends in advising Required Qualifications Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a bachelor's degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one year. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of student success trends and challenges and understanding of student development theory Knowledge of college policies, and procedures and effective interpretation and application Knowledge of computers and job related software programs. Knowledge of issues and trends related to adult learners. Skill in interpersonal relationships. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in the completion of a variety of reports.
