Description

TRIO Upward Bound programs provide the following services to first generation students and their families from disadvantaged backgrounds: academic and general skills tutoring; academic planning and course selection; information on financial aid and assistance in completing FAFSA; financial and economic literacy; assistance to college access; and professional, leadership, and cultural development.

Under the supervision of the Director, the TRIO Upward Bound Academic Coordinator is responsible for working with students in assessing their skills and designing individualized, comprehensive academic plans to prepare them for secondary and postsecondary success. The AC also helps to plan and deliver year-round workshops series focusing on leadership, career, and college preparation.

Candidates must be willing to often work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekend events.
Examples of Duties

  • Recruit, interview, evaluate and select students for the UB Program;
  • Develop Individualized Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) and refer to support services as identified;
  • Assess student academic needs and establish realistic, attainable goals;
  • Counsel students on UB Program requirements and expected levels of academic performance;
  • Monitor and track grades, GPA, academic performance and levels of progress;
  • Plan and organize workshops and seminars;
  • Build positive working relationships and collaborations with Target Schools' staff, college campus staff and community partners;
  • Assist UB staff with Summer Programs;
  • Manage all online and hard copy student files efficiently and effectively;
  • Assist UB staff with timely data collection and preparation of the Annual Progress Report.
  • And other duties and tasks as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, or related field
  • Familiarity with academic assessment instruments
  • Knowledge of secondary and postsecondary education systems and processes
  • Proficiency in case management
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or related field. Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • 3+ years of experience in providing academic advising and counseling services to culturally, racially diverse and disadvantaged students;
  • Professional experience in an education setting
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Experience working in educational opportunity programs serving disadvantaged populations
  • Proven experience in coordinating and facilitating projects, events and activities;
  • Proven experience in managing student records, assessing student's needs, academic advising and developing student goals in pursuit of higher education;
  • Knowledge and experience with transition and secondary and postsecondary retention issues.

Supplemental Information

  • Most of the job is sedentary, however, occasional periods of light work may be required;
  • Lifting up to approximately 35 lbs. occasionally.
  • The worker may be exposed to primarily to inside office conditions.
