The individual in this position provides academic advisement and registration for students, which requires ascertaining student's goals and assisting in the planning for student attainment of those goals. They serve as a liaison to academic departments, college committees, and community organizations as directed. An advisor must be knowledgeable in the breadth of college offerings for both credit and continuing education program course work. The individual provides information to prospective students regarding the College of Southern Maryland. The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday; some weekends and evenings may be required. Flexibility is required. The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions: Serves as liaison to academic departments, college committees, and community organizations as directed by supervisor Assigned to an academic department to track program changes, maintain contact with department chair and faculty, give input to department program changes that may adversely affect student progress and reports back to the Advising, Career, and Enrollment group Provides information to prospective students regarding the College of Southern Maryland Ensures students are taking correct courses for transfer in specific programs and particular institutions Interprets placement test scores, advises students of course placement and works with student to develop an educational plan based on placement, academic and life goals and career aspirations Monitors student progress of academically deficient students requiring ongoing contact with student and instructors Provides referrals to other campus and community resources regarding student issues both academic and personal Conducts advisement workshops Facilitates Start Smart orientations and First Advising Sessions Coordinates with middle school and high school counselors to develop collaborative relationships for the purposes or providing early academic awareness programs and interventions in the public schools Mentors a College Success Skills class during the fall and spring semesters Processes course waivers, prerequisite waivers, prerequisite override documentation, academic clemency requests, portfolio assessment applications, and drop/add forms as required Assists students with academic based computerized systems (i.e. ARTSYS) Informs students of articulation agreements applicable to desired programs Assists students in interpretation of transfer requirements for articulation agreements and transfer options in general, if applicable Completes/updates program evaluations for students as needed Assists students in completing graduation applications and verifies data Maintains tracking systems of student contact and classifications for reporting purposes, such as academic and career assistance, workshops and classroom visits, orientation and others as directed by supervisor Collaborates with and coordinates site activities with the Career Services Departments at other campuses as appropriate to insure comprehensive services across campuses Makes in-class academic presentations Provides career advisement and registration for students, which requires ascertaining student's goals and assisting in the planning for student's attainment of these goals Provides job readiness assistance to co-op students; maintains contact with co-op faculty advisors; registers students for co-op classes Provides contact for students who are undecided about career or college goals Provides career advisement for students to include: personal interest assessments, career identification and planning, job readiness assessments, job coaching, and job search training Organizes, develops, and promotes career related events both on campus and to the community, school system, and students including collaborating with marketing, outside employers, agencies and school systems Serves on task forces related to improving the delivery of student services Develops innovative solutions to managing a large student caseload and disseminating student services information Serve on committees that directly impact the vision of the department Other duties as assigned by the Director of Advising and Career Services Additional Duties: Performs other related work as required. Minimum Education and Training BS or BA degree required with two years' experience in career development, education, advising or four year's experience in related field.
