Job Description SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Health Careers Program (HCP) and Upward Bound (UB), the Health Careers Program Academic Advisor/Counselor is responsible for comprehensive advisement of a caseload and the development and execution of recruitment, retention, outreach and liaison programs. The Academic Advisor/Counselor contributes to the development and implementation of the strategic vision/goals, program planning, policy formation, outcomes assessment, annual reporting/compliance with the Office of the Secretary of Education - Educational Opportunity Fund and Montclair State University, overseeing the financial aid review of Health Careers Program scholars within the enrollment pipeline, BS/MD scholars, other campus access programs/cohorts, supervision/co-training of part-time employees/interns/peer leaders, liaison with designated offices and departments, and intentional student development initiatives related to learning, retention, graduation and post undergraduate enrollment. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide comprehensive group and one-on-one counseling/advising to all assigned students. Co-coordinate the Health Careers Program Summer Institute. Adhere to and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and University/Health Careers Program policies and procedures. Utilize available electronic student record/information systems such as Canvas, Banner, Degree Works and Navigate. Provide comprehensive Financial Aid/Financial literacy services, including NJFAMS review. Coordinate Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Dental Admission Test (DAT), and other Health Professions Admission Test Presentations. Review/critique Health Professions, Graduate School applications and career search documents. Assist in the application process and placement of students applying to summer externship programs, preceptorships and coop experiences. Serve as a liaison with key internal and external stakeholders as appointed by the Health Careers Program Director. Support and/or advise Health Careers Program scholars in various internal and external programs and scholarships. Assist with annual reports, grant proposals, and relevant data collection. Participate in enrollment recruitment related activities/presentations for current and prospective students as needed. Review Health Careers Program data and publications for accuracy. Seek active membership and participation in related professional associations and maintain awareness of current trends and issues. Perform other duties as assigned. Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time. QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Minimum of two years of professional experience in an institution of higher education or in another related field. Experience working with educationally underprepared and economically disadvantaged students. Strong analytical and data management skills. PREFERRED: Experience in higher education in a position directly related to the functions of the position such as enrollment management, financial aid, counseling/advising, career counseling, or other students' academic service area. Prior experience working with students who are low-income and/or first-generation.
