As another year comes to an end, it’s only natural to want to slow down and tie up loose ends. And if you’re on the hunt for a new job, that means packing away your resume and starting again in the new year.
But is that the right approach? Possibly not! The festive season actually presents a lot of opportunities to get ahead of the game before the new year rush. We take a look at why you shouldn’t hit pause on your job hunt over the holidays.
Network your way to the top
For most people, December (aka the silly season) is packed full of end of year drinks and Christmas parties.
With events a-plenty, it’s the perfect chance to meet some new faces and drop a few hints that you’re actually on the hunt for work. And who knows, maybe the jolly spirits everyone is in at these events will help you land your dream job.
Competition is sparse
There are a lot of distractions during the holiday season, but if you’re a multi-tasking whiz, it’s actually a perfect time to be hunting for work. You’ll be up against way less competition, and if you can make time for interviews (when a lot of people might be on holidays) you could land yourself with more opportunities than in other months of the year.
Seasonal jobs often lead to permanent work
Many organisations need more hands during the holiday season, and so even if you land yourself a temp gig for a couple of months, it’s a great way to make connections and possibly get yourself more permanent work after the holiday rush dies down.
Think of it as an on-the-job interview and use it as a way to show-case what you can offer to the organisation beyond your contract.
