While companies are initiating their annual hiring processes, job seekers should brace themselves for a potentially frustrating landscape, marked by the prevalence of "ghost jobs."

In a recent survey by MyPerfectResume, 81% of recruiters admitted to their organizations posting fake job listings. This deceptive practice not only squanders job seekers' time and energy, but may also negatively impact their confidence and mental well-being.

While some companies claim to use this practice to maintain visibility on job boards, test the effectiveness of their job descriptions or build a talent pool, the report uncovered more troubling motivations.

A quarter of respondents indicated that ghost jobs were used to assess how replaceable their current employees were, while 23% used them to project an image of stability during hiring freezes.

Little To No Feedback

Lack of feedback from employers is another persistent problem, leaving candidates in the dark about their application status or areas for improvement. Many job seekers experience being "ghosted" by recruiters, human resources personnel and hiring managers, which can be demoralizing and frustrating.

Previously, offering constructive feedback was a professional norm in hiring processes. Interview insights served as valuable learning opportunities, enabling candidates to refine their approach for subsequent interview rounds or future job applications.

The absence of feedback creates significant challenges for job seekers trying to understand their interview performance. This feedback was mutually advantageous, as it empowered candidates to develop their interview skills while simultaneously helping companies preserve their professional image and demonstrate respect for potential employees.

However, the current job market has seen a drastic change in this practice. A survey by Resume Genius revealed that approximately 80% of hiring managers have ghosted applicants and ceased communication with candidates during the hiring process without explanation.

The communication breakdown often stems from uncertainties, including difficulty identifying the most suitable candidate, feeling overwhelmed by the extensive volume of applicants and experiencing internal hesitation about an individual's potential organizational fit.

This shift has led to frustration and disappointment among job seekers who invest time and effort in the interview process.
